What Are Misleading Product Listings?

Shop aims to create a shopping environment that inspires confidence in our customers. When shopping online, customers rely on photographs, descriptions, and videos of products to confidently make purchases. Misleading product listings may negatively impact a customer's buying experience. All sellers must be truthful when listing their products on Shop and must also abide by our Product Listing Guidelines.
A product listing is considered misleading if it contains false displays of information, exaggerated promises, comparisons or false claims. Misleading product listings will result in enforcement actions by Shop.
Note: In addition to the examples below, different destination markets may have additional requirements for specific types of product claims. Sellers must ensure full compliance with these requirements, and carefully review the relevant guidelines along with applicable laws of the destination market before listing their products.

False Display of Information
  • Accurate representation of products through descriptions and media is required, and any misleading information, whether through statements or omissions, is prohibited.
  • Sellers are prohibited from providing misleading information about product descriptions, media, services, intellectual property ownership, and related services such as delivery, logistics, returns, refunds, and customer service.
  • Sellers must be consistent and accurate with prices, discounts, images, brand names, descriptions, models, selling attributes, product attributes and product guarantees/warranties.
  • Product attributes must be complete, accurate, and consistent with the product's name, description, and images on the listing page.
Exaggerated Promises
  • Product listings must not use exaggerated descriptions or make miracle claims.
  • The following claims/promises are prohibited:
    • Claims of being the "Number 1 product"
    • Descriptions such as "the best...", "the first...", "the only...", or of a similar nature
    • Exaggerated claims of miracle cures, the ability to cure medical conditions, or promises of unverifiable cosmetic results
    • Exaggerated claims of instant effects or results within a specified time limit.
Comparisons
  • Product listings must not contain comparisons with other products or e-commerce sites.
  • It is misleading to falsely claim that a product or service can enhance or cure medical conditions.
  • The following claims/promises are prohibited:
    • Claims that a product is cheaper than it is on another website.
    • 'Before' and 'After' images that show supposed results from acne-clearing creams, slimming creams, or weight loss supplements, etc.
False Claims
  • Product listings must not make false claims about a product.
  • The following claims/promises are prohibited:
    • Making false claims about awards or certifications received by the product.
    • Making false claims about the product being affiliated with other products.

    • "This food product prevents cancer, heart disease, treats haemorrhoids, relieves arthritis symptoms, headaches, tinnitus, etc."
    • "This cosmetic product will prevent or reduce the inflammation of acne and treat blemishes."
    • "This product will cure all your ailments."

  • The brand mentioned in the product listing is not consistent with the brand mentioned in the promoted content. Non-exhaustive examples include:
    • The listed product is unbranded, but the promoted product is branded
    • The promoted product's brand is different from the brand that is listed.

Exaggerated Promises
  • Claims that a product can alter a customer's body structure, organ functions, or immune system. Non-exhausive examples are:
    • "This food product nourishes your brain, nerves and detoxifies the body etc."
    • "This cosmetic product will restore, balance, skin, detoxifies, lifts or tightens the skin, etc."
    • "This product contains anti-oxidant properties."
  • Claims that a product can enhance a customer's sexual performance.
  • Claims that food products are able to alter the skin and provide beautification properties.
    • "This food product can reduce wrinkles, slow down aging, or stop hair loss etc."

Comparisons
  • Claims that a product can deliver instant or guaranteed results, within a stipulated or progressive timeframe. For example:
    • "Your acne will be gone in 1 week after using this product!"
    • "This product will help you lose 5 kg in 2 weeks"
    • "This product will provide you with instant results"

False Claims
  • Claims or exaggerations of a product's "before and after" results in relation to:
    • Skincare (acne, wrinkles, freckles, scars, dark spots)
    • Hair growth
    • Face tightening
    • Weight-loss/fat burning
    • Enhancement of the body

  • Making false claims about awards or certifications received by the product. For example:
    • "This product has won the number 1 award for best beauty product in the country"

How to Avoid Misleading Product Listings

When listing products on Shop:
  • Ensure that your product listings contain accurate information and details about a product.
  • Provide product disclaimers where necessary, for example, "Actual results may vary" or "Discontinue if irritation occurs".

What Happens if I Have Misleading Information in My Product Listings?

Shop may take enforcement actions against sellers for misleading product listings. Possible enforcement actions include, but are not limited to:
  • Removing the product from the platform
  • Removing or blocking content
  • Formal warning messages
  • Suspension of seller privileges
  • Temporary or permanent withdrawal of seller benefits
  • Assigning Violation Points to a seller's shop. An accumulation of violation points can result in a seller's Shop selling privileges being revoked
  • Reporting the seller to the relevant regulatory authorities
